OpenAI will use AMD chips
PLUS: Github cuts AI deals with Anthropic and Google
OpenAI is now going to work with AMD for chips.
They are also working with NVIDIA.
Let’s see what they want to achieve by working with AMD for their AI tools.
OpenAI 🤝 AMD
OpenAI is refining its hardware strategy to handle the massive AI workloads powering ChatGPT and other tools — including the potential to develop its own chips by 2026, according to Reuters.
Here’s what’s happening:
AMD Chips in Play: OpenAI is set to add AMD’s MI300 chips to its infrastructure on Microsoft Azure, alongside Nvidia’s processors. AMD’s data center business has surged, driven by AI demand, and this shift signals OpenAI’s bid to diversify chip suppliers for reliability and cost-efficiency.
Custom Silicon Partnership with Broadcom: OpenAI has reportedly secured a team of about 20 engineers, including past Google Tensor architects, to design custom chips with Broadcom. But despite initial moves, these in-house AI chips likely won’t be production-ready until 2026.
Foundry Setbacks: Plans to establish proprietary foundries for AI chip manufacturing have reportedly stalled due to high costs, pushing OpenAI to rely on partnerships with TSMC for manufacturing capacity.
In the AI arms race, major players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have already rolled out multiple generations of custom AI chips.
With this hardware expansion, OpenAI is positioning itself to become a more formidable player, though the company may need even greater funding to catch up.
🤖 Github AI deals:
Microsoft’s GitHub is expanding its AI capabilities by integrating models from Anthropic and Google into its widely-used coding assistant, Copilot.
At first, GitHub users can ask questions and chat with Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Google’s Gemini.
Soon, GitHub plans to incorporate these models directly into Copilot’s main functions, offering developers more options beyond the default OpenAI models.
Here’s what’s interesting:
Model Choices for Developers: With the new integration, developers can switch between models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic based on their specific needs. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke says the goal is to provide a flexible, multi-cloud environment for users who may rely on Google Cloud or Amazon Web Services.
AI Project Spark: GitHub is also testing a new tool, Spark, that allows users to create mini applications (like travel logs or RSVP trackers) with simple English prompts. This tool aims to help both beginners and advanced developers, as they can modify code and switch between programming and prompt-based creation.
Building Blocks of Code: As AI models improve, Copilot’s “Lego blocks” of code are getting bigger and more capable. Dohmke explains that while AI can’t yet generate entire apps like Facebook, it can piece together increasingly larger components, which speeds up the software development process.
Since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub has maintained a diverse range of partnerships. The new Anthropic model will run on AWS, aligning with GitHub’s push for flexibility across major cloud platforms and meeting the demands of developers who rely on more than one AI provider.
