Open source is all that matters!

PLUS: Meta created a copy of Google's viral podcaster generator and made it "Open" for everyone

The world of AI is splitting in two.

Some companies are locking up their AI models, while others are opening them up for everyone to use and improve.

Let’s dive into why open-source AI is a game-changer—and how Meta’s new podcast generator fits into this shift.

🙌 Open-source matters!

In the flashy world of AI, open-source tech rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. But beneath the big names like OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic, there’s an active community in open source working to make AI accessible to all—especially those without massive budgets.

Here’s why open source is essential for AI:

  • Power in Collaboration: Open source lets anyone use, adapt, and improve AI tools, fostering a community-driven model of progress. Hugging Face, for example, hosts over a million open-source AI models for public use.

  • Accessible AI Tools: Platforms like Stable Diffusion and Ollama let users run AI models directly on their devices, promoting privacy and avoiding reliance on major cloud providers.

  • Catalyst for Future Tech: Many local, smaller-scale AI innovations could lead to AI on wearables or IoT devices, all thanks to community-driven experimentation.

While companies like Meta claim to release “open” models, some restrict access—prompting the call for true “open source” rather than “open weights.” For instance, Meta’s LLaMa models aren’t fully open source, and this distinction matters to maintain transparency.

However, open-source also faces challenges:

  • Market “Bait-and-Switch”: Some companies launch as open-source but pivot to commercial models once they’ve gained traction, much like OpenAI did.

  • Global Impact: True open-source projects help bridge the AI gap worldwide, allowing languages and cultures that lack resources to still benefit from the tech. Mistral AI and BLOOM, for instance, are leading examples of this shift.

As new models like Genmo’s Mochi-1 emerge, we see community collaboration refining them quickly for wider access—even on modest hardware setups.

Despite commercialization pressures, open source in AI will continue to flourish, leveling the field and bringing AI’s benefits to all.

🤖 Meta AI:

Meta just dropped NotebookLlama, its version of Google’s popular NotebookLM podcast feature, using its own Llama models for a unique twist on AI-generated audio.

You can check it here.

Here’s how it works:

  • NotebookLlama takes text files (like PDFs) and generates a conversational, back-and-forth podcast-style digest.

  • It spices up the script with “dramatization” and interruptions, then runs it through open-source text-to-speech (TTS) models.

The quality, though, isn’t perfect. The TTS output has a noticeable robotic tone and some awkward overlap between voices, giving it a slightly less polished sound compared to Google’s NotebookLM. Meta’s researchers admit the model could use stronger TTS capabilities to sound more natural.

Interestingly, the GitHub page hints at potential improvements: future versions might introduce two AI “hosts” debating topics, rather than a single model crafting the entire outline.

While other projects have tried to replicate this podcast generator concept, the ongoing challenge remains—AI still struggles with “hallucinations,” or generating false information, so expect some creative additions in these AI-produced podcasts.
