Meta wants subscriptions across its free apps

Meta now has a $499-a-month subscription.
Its new Meta One service bundles more than 50 features across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI, with separate plans for individuals, creators and businesses. Meta says its subscriptions and trials have already reached 15 million.
The free apps remain.
The ceiling now costs money.
For individuals, paying means higher limits for compute-heavy features such as AI image and video generation. For businesses, the more expensive plans add analytics, publishing tools, account access and greater capacity for Meta’s customer-service AI agent.
I think the range of plans is the important part: Meta is testing how many different users will pay for advantages inside products they already open every day.
A phone screen that once showed the same Instagram to everyone can increasingly offer different capabilities depending on the subscription attached to the account.

AI loss-of-control incidents are getting congressional attention

Congress is asking AI companies what went wrong.
The House Science Committee held a bipartisan meeting with OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face and METR on September 15 to discuss recent AI loss-of-control incidents and possible safeguards.
Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren cited incidents involving OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, though this release does not explain exactly what happened in each case. Members discussed internal controls, cybersecurity and governance while considering possible policy responses.
That detail matters.
Oversight is getting specific.
I think the important signal is that lawmakers are moving from broad arguments about AI risk toward examining individual failures with companies and outside evaluators in the room.
The committee could turn those incidents into requirements around testing, reporting or internal controls, although the release does not identify a specific new proposal.
How much will companies eventually have to disclose when an AI system behaves unexpectedly?

Scientists are saving nearly seven hours a week with AI, yet many of their new hypotheses are waiting to be tested.
Google, DeepMind and MIT FutureTech surveyed more than 600 U.S. and U.K. scientists and analyzed 2,600 specialized AI models. Nearly half of surveyed scientists use some form of AI every day.
The time savings are real.
So is the backlog.
AI can accelerate analysis and other computer-based work, but experiments and clinical validation still take hours at the lab bench and cannot simply match that pace. I think that gap matters more than another headline about faster models because it shows where productivity gains can actually stall.
Labs may need to change staffing, equipment access and validation processes if researchers keep generating testable ideas faster than they can physically evaluate them.
