Cognichip went commercial and how

Chip design still takes months and costs $40M to $100M per advanced tape-out, while the industry races toward a shortage of a million designers by 2030. Cognichip just launched ACI Enterprise (Artificial Chip Intelligence) to change that math. It runs on the first physics-informed foundation model for chip design, not a general LLM bent toward hardware.

The stat worth sitting with: one engineer took a 55-page spec through micro-architecture, RTL, verification, and PPA optimization in a few days, work that used to take a front-end team four to five months.

What makes it notable: the model is the design (every spec, test, and constraint lives in one evolving model you can revisit years later), customer IP never leaves the customer's walls, and it's built to work alongside engineers rather than replace them. Renesas and SiTime are already on board, and it's backed by $93M including Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

AI policy is moving into campaign politics

Obama wants Democrats talking about AI.

At a closed-door Manhattan fundraiser, the former president urged party leaders to develop a public plan covering AI safety, job losses and the effects of the technology on children.

The timing matters. Investment in AI is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2026, while Congress has made little progress on national rules and communities are increasingly fighting the datacenters being built around them.

You can hear the political argument getting simpler. Obama is telling Democrats to focus on the everyday consequences people can see, including jobs, kids and the large facilities appearing in their towns.

Trump is taking the other side, arguing that slowing development risks losing the AI race to China.

That gives voters two increasingly different approaches to AI ahead of the midterms, even as politicians from both parties campaign against datacenters in some communities.

AI policy may finally become something candidates have to explain clearly to voters.

Schools are getting specific about student AI use

El Paso schools are considering a clear cutoff.

Under a proposed framework, students through eighth grade would be barred from using AI to complete schoolwork, while older students could use it for studying, brainstorming or editing when teachers allow it.

The district is also considering rules for student privacy, AI literacy and teacher training before adopting a formal policy.

I think the age split is the interesting part. Instead of treating every use of ChatGPT or another AI tool as cheating, the proposal tries to define when students are ready to use these tools without handing over the actual work.

That distinction will matter at a desk when a student has an assignment open and needs to know exactly what the teacher permits.

Other districts will face the same practical problem as AI becomes routine outside school.

How much AI use still counts as learning?

Mistral thinks AI buyers want more control

Mistral just raised €3 billion.

Samsung Electronics led the Series D, which values the three-year-old French AI company at more than €21 billion and gives it considerably more money to spend on models, compute and international expansion.

Mistral already operates across 20 countries and says it supports more than 125 large enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.

What stands out is the pitch. Mistral is betting that large companies and governments increasingly care about where their data sits, who controls their models and what happens if a provider changes its pricing or roadmap.

That concern is easy to understand when AI moves from a browser tab into internal systems handling sensitive company data every day.

The Samsung investment makes the argument more interesting because Mistral now has major industrial companies backing its approach, following an earlier round led by ASML.

The open question is whether customers value that control enough to make Mistral a serious alternative to much larger AI providers.
